Reducing Adverse Impacts of Collisions Involving Self-Driven Cars

Researchers have developed a new system to alleviate the damage caused when self-driven vehicles crash. Despite the utility of self-driven vehicles, their automated and machine-inspired decision generates scope for errors. Hence, there is a need to mitigate the adverse impacts of a mishap caused by self-driven vehicles. The technology developed by the researchers is based on motion-planning and AI-based decision making. The systems claims to reduce physical damage and injuries caused by unavoidable accidents. Once the system understands the inevitability of a crash, it follows the least damaging course of action.

Minimising Damage Caused by Uncontrollable Collisions

A professor from the University of Waterloo explains that it is important to mitigate the adverse consequences of a crash. The system is based on solving similar problems of post-crash damages. The primary line of action in this regard is to try and avoid collisions with pedestrians. Furthermore, the system considers various factors such as speed, angle of collision, and vehicle-mass to minimise damage. The most apt means of manoeuvring is to control the braking and steering systems of a vehicle. Hence, the new technology combines the synergies of these systems to reduce the cumulative impact of accidents.

Mitigating Unanticipated Events

The researchers state that the new system is based on analysing the overall traffic ecosystem for vehicles. The technology continually learns from new events to improve the effectiveness of the system.  There are several unanticipated events that can become a cause of accidents and mishaps. Hence, the system is configured to understand unanticipated risks and interventions.

The system uses sensors, cameras, and other technologies to understand the immediate surroundings. This helps the system in continually analysing threats, mitigating risks, and reducing adversities from accidents. It would be interesting to see the response of automobile manufacturers to the launch of this technology.
