As the novel coronavirus threat looms over the globe, many researchers are coming together to develop new COVID-19 related technologies. Therefore, they emerge as a ray of hope for tackling the dangerous virus with efficient technologies.
Researchers are in the process of developing an antibody that will nullify the novel coronavirus before it harms the body. Natural antibodies present in the body help to neutralize any type of infection. But injected antibodies can prove to be a game-changer. Eventually, this antibody, when injected, can successfully tackle the virus and boost the immune system.
Antibodies to help block the S-protein
The developed antibodies have the potential to successfully block the S-protein that forms spikes on the virus. These spikes stick to ACE2, another protein on the human cell surface that serves as an entrance to further damage the body. Therefore, these antibodies by coating viral particles with antibodies will prevent further damage by the spikes.
Phage display usage for selecting the right antibodies
The researchers will use phage display, a process involving minute bacterial viruses known as phages to develop massive libraries comprising diverse antibodies. Furthermore, with phage display, the researchers will identify the ideal antibodies that effectively kill the virus in human bodies. In addition to developing tailor-made antibodies for tackling the virus, the researchers will also upgrade and enhance the existing anti-SARS antibodies. Therefore, this will help to attack COVID-19 more effectively.
With over 1200000 cases and over 65000+ deaths as of now, these antibodies will prove to a blessing to lower the rising number of positive cases across the globe to a great extent.
