New Heated Tobacco Device as Harmful as E-Cigarette and Smoking

A recently published study in ERJ Open Research suggests that new heated tobacco devices are equally unhealthy as traditional cigarettes. This new device heats solid tobacco instead of e-liquid and has the same effects as an ordinary cigarette or vaping.

Heated Tabaco Devices have Higher Toxicity Level as Cigarette Smoke

Dr. Pawan Sharma, a working researcher at the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research and the University of Technology, Sydney led this study. According to Dr. Sharma, smoking is one of the major causes of preventable death. But with the introduction of e-cigarettes, the trend of nicotine uptake is not likely to slow down in the coming years. If these recent trends continue, the number of deaths might climb to 8 million annually by 2030 across the globe. The main objective of this study is to understand more about heated tobacco devices commonly known as heat-not-burn-products or the next-generation cigarettes

Researchers verified the effects of all the three nicotine sources on smooth muscle cells and epithelial cells. They concluded that heated tobacco vapor and cigarette smoke affected cells at both lower and higher concentration, whereas, e-cigarette vapor showed toxicity at higher concentration. Researchers also added by saying that these concentrations symbolize the levels of nicotine found in chronic smokers.

Scientists also said that they took nearly five decades to clearly know the damaging effects of cigarette smoke. But they are unaware of the long-term impact of using e-cigarettes. They are relatively new and will take many years to fully understand its effects on human health.
