Increasing Resistance of Solar Cells to Water, Light, and Air

Organic solar cells have been gaining popularity across the world. Global researchers have accredited the efficiency of these cells. Furthermore, the global organic solar cells market is expected to grow over 20% during 2017-2020. Organic solar cells have several benefits over traditional silicon-based solar cells. This factor has also played a key role in the growth of the market for organic solar cells. It is easy to produce organic solar cells on a large scale due to their easy processing. Furthermore, the use of green chemistry to produce solar cells from earthen materials is also a key trend. The flexibility, tractability, and lightweight of organic solar cells have increased their demand across the globe. Despite these advantages, organic solar cells are prone to damage through exposure to sunlight and moisture.

Environmental Externalities and Attacks

The vulnerability of solar cells to these environmental externalities adds to their cost of production. To curb this, scientists conducted a research at the Tandon School of Engineering of New York University. The research has found ways of preventing organic solar cells from external attacks by sunlight or moisture. Removing certain materials from the cells can increase the cells’ resistance to externalities. Further, this can also help in increasing the overall efficiency of solar cells.

Future Research

Researchers tested the amount of time for which the solar cells can remain suspended in water without deteriorating. Furthermore, researchers also traced the loss of efficiency in the solar cells during the experiment. This research can pave way for new systems in organic solar cell development.
