Google’s Daydream VR Headsets to Overshadow HTC Vive & Oculus Rift

Google has announced that its Daydream design will be available in the market before the end of this year. What’s more, these first ever standalone virtual reality headsets, manufactured by Lenovo and HTC, will come with in-built positional tracking. This feature has been lacking in smartphone-based models for quite some time and now, HTC Vive and Oculus Rift have clear competition in their hands. In fact, if promises are delivered, Google’s standalone Daydream VR headsets has already overshadowed its competitors who are significantly expensive and require external tracking sensors as well as a cable connection to a computer system with strong graphics card.

Lenovo’s next flagship smartphone, which will be launching later this year, and Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ will support the Daydream platform.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 Processor Impressed Google
Intel unveiled its Project Alloy at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) last year, while Qualcomm represented a model based on Snapdragon 835 processor. The latter caught Google’s liking and now in standalone Daydream VR headsets, these Qualcomm processors have been integrated with Google’s tracking technology. This development is expected to broaden virtual reality’s horizon beyond video games to a much larger audiences.

The current VR headset from Google, called the $79 Daydream View, has been competing with Samsung Gear VR, but both headsets depend on special applications and offer narrow range of compatibility. This limits their appeal to everyday users, failing to track their wearers’ location, which is essential for immersive VR games and other 3D experiences.

Oculus’ Santa Cruz Prototype Delayed
Facebook-owned Oculus have recognized the competition coming from Google’s Daydream design and are themselves working on a standalone headset called Santa Cruz, a prototype that was briefed last fall. However, its availability is still pending.
